Tips for making the most of the evening
I've bought my ticket, got my suit, I'm all set! Or am I?
So you think you're just going to show up on the night, schmooze with some company reps, down some grog and eat some food? You could OR you could make the most of your $20. That's why we've compiled:
Application/Job Interviews: Preparation [before the evening] - Top
- Do your background research and get the most out of the company representatives (don't waste your time asking questions which can be answered online!). Impress the reps with your knowledge and make a more lasting impression prior to interviews (and not just because of the number of times they told you 'You can find out online').
- Check out the company website. Find out some information about the job application process, deadlines, assessment centres etc.
- Drop into the careers fair, pick up some brochures (and freebies while you're at it!), try to find out as much as possible
- Familiarise yourself with the job application process – The number of interview stages, types of interviews (Individual? Group? Behavioural based? How many interviewers?), length of interviews, who is the interview with and (perhaps most importantly) how many people are they taking and what type of person is the firm looking for?
Questions to ask/things to find out [during the evening] - Top
- Ask specific questions on what it is like to work at the firm, particular areas within the firm etc. eg with Audit and assurance: what does a typical work day involve? Why would you want to work in this area?
- What sets the firms apart from the rest (Reps don't really like this question but you will almost definitely get this in the interview!)? Why would you want to work for this firm?
- Clarify any questions you may have from your research.
- !!Do NOT ask about salary/wages!! At least wait till you are passed the first interview round!
Getting acquainted with/networking with other members - Top
- Networking could be extremely useful for the future; it is the buzzword within industry. You never know, you may encounter these people in the future – they may be your colleagues, business associates or people that can refer you to other career opportunities/contacts.
- This is the perfect opportunity to tap into the Golden Key network. There will be members from Monash from different fields of study and members from RMIT, Deakin, Swinburne, Ballarat and La Trobe as well. One of the other reasons we are holding this event is to give you the opportunity to get to know other Golden Key members.
- Try and talk to other GK members. Don't be shy, we're all in the same society and chances are a lot of the people you meet will be studying your course or something similar, and they might not know anyone there either.
- Start off with questions like: "I know you from ---- class, or how are you finding the evening tonight". Or if they are from a different university, ask what their university is like or talk about the differences in your course structures.
Joining the Committee - Top
- Consider joining the committee or sub-committees for other Golden Key events: these provide valuable teamwork and leadership experiences – which is what employers look for on resumes and in interviews. I know everyone says it, but once you leave uni, a lot of work is done in teams so start building those teamwork and leadership skills now!
- Feel free to approach the committee members, especially the President, Vice-President, and Graduate Advisers, we're all happy to talk about our experiences with joining the committee and tell you about the benefits of Golden Key, and how to get the most of your membership
What is business attire? - Top
- One word: Suits.
- Girls: Either matching pants and jacket or matching skirt and jacket. If not, just try to look professional.
- Guys: Matching pants and jacket, collared shirt and tie. If you don't have a jacket, a shirt and tie would do.
- So just be neat and professional looking. Clean shoes and all that jazz.
The one thing to remember about the night is to ENJOY yourselves and HAVE FUN!!!
